Downieville School is always busy, even though we have just come back from winter break. But it’s a good thing we left on a good note. Just before the break, on Tuesday December 17h, we had a Rising Above assembly. The children who got awards were Abby Sainsbury, Tristan Jackson, Connor White, Charlie Reed, Austin Foster, Faith Dupree, and Robert Baker. On the high school side, the students recognized were Jonnie Catoe, Rosendo Marquez, Tommy Dines, and sisters, Sean and JoJo Epps. The high school students each received one free burger meal at the Grubstake!
Thursday December 19th, the high school students had a Christmas party, featuring a gingerbread house contest; there were four groups competing and everyone had tons of fun. There was also a Christmas quiz! The winners, Jarrett Lawes and Matthew Lozano, received a tin of cookies. Santa arrived to distribute the Secret Santa gifts and everyone loved their presents! Also we had lots of snacks and tasty desserts.
Monday January 6th, we had guest Sierra Patheal come in and give a presentation about the college CSU Long Beach. First the students played a game Sierra made up, where each student had to match up a “fill in the blank” card with the appropriate fact about Long Beach. Sierra also provided each student with a goodie bag with candy, a pencil, and an eraser. Everyone enjoyed learning about Long Beach; many thanks to Sierra for her time.
The girls’ basketball team has had a lot of fun so far. They played in their second tournament of the season at Elk Creek, December 20th – 21st. They played a very close game against Greenville, losing only after two of our five players fouled out, and they beat Elk Creek. Savannah Burr and Fiona Baiker were the MVP’s of the game! JoJo Epps and Ali Rambo had the most rebounds. Alexis Whitaker had the most steals. Great team effort!! Go Lady Warriors! Tuesday, January 7th, they had a home game against Princeton. Fiona Baiker had the most rebounds and steals. She and Alexis Whitaker made the most points, and the whole team played fantastic. Friday, January 10th, the Lady Warriors played Westwood. Fiona Baiker made three pointers all night, thus making the most points for the team, even though they lost. Great job Fiona! Tuesday, January 14th, they played Loyalton; details for that game will be in the next Weekly Warrior.
The Lady Warriors have several more games coming up. Make sure to be at the home game against Greenville on Friday January 17th! January 21st – 23rd they are traveling to Herlong and then American Christian Academy in Redding. Tuesday January 28th they play Westwood at home. Come support the ladies and make sure to get some snacks at the PTO concession’s stand. The menu is different for each game. On Jan. 7th, they served hot dogs, nachos, and snacks and on Jan. 14th, we had lasagna, salad, and bread. Jan. 28th they will serve pizza, hot dogs, and nachos. Feb. 7th they will have chili and cornbread along with the regulars. Feb. 11th, they will have chili and anything leftover.
Mr. Tassone wants to thank the Sierra Schools Foundation for the grant of 10 iPads for the 9-12th grade students. The district will fund 5 more so every high school student will have one to use. Another thanks from Mr. Corcoran for the SSF grant which will fund the art teacher Katie O’Hara-Kelly. She will be in history and science classes at the start of the new semester!
CSF students are once again taking orders for Valentine’s Day flowers. Order your roses and carnations for your special someone soon for the best selection. Delivery will be Friday, February 14. CSF members are Fiona Baiker, Savannah Burr and Alexis Whitaker.
The quarter/semester ends Friday January 17th so make sure to get your grades up, all you students! Report cards should be out soon thereafter.
